Serials Coordinator:  The University Libraries (www.lib.vt.edu) at
Virginia Tech is seeking to fill the position of Serials Coordinator in
the Technical Services department.  The Serials Coordinator will direct
and manage all of the functions of the Continuations Management Team which
include the receipt, check-in, bibliographic maintenance, and binding of
serials in an automated environment.  Responsible for planning, setting
goals and priorities, formulating policies, designing and monitoring
workflow, allocating staff, and providing leadership for the continuing
development of serials automation.  The successful candidate will be
familiar with current trends in serials management and control, including
computer applications and national standards for bibliographic controls;
have demonstrated experience with OCLC and a local library cataloging
system; be able to provide strong leadership; and possess effective
communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. The
Continuations Management Team consists of twelve staff and has a large
student wage budget.  The team's responsibilities include check-in,
claiming and binding of 18,000 continuing titles, and the receiving and
cataloging of government depository items. The VTLS library system is used
for serials check-in, and the library uses the USMARC standard for coded
holdings. Reports to the Director of Technical Services.

Qualifications:  Required: Master's degree in Library/Information Science
from an ALA-accredited program; experience with serials management in an
automated library environment; knowledge of current national trends and
issues in serials control; demonstrated experience working with a
bibliographic utility and an integrated local cataloging system, and
experience with computer applications such as spreadsheets and database
management; demonstrated successful supervisory and training experience;
ability to employ data-based decisions in problem solving; excellent
communication and interpersonal skills.  Preferred: Academic library
experience; participation in professional activities at the national or
local level; demonstrated problem solving skills, especially workflow
analysis of technical services functions.

Professional contributions beyond the primary job, e.g., publications,
leadership in university and professional organizations, and other
research and creative activity are expected for continued appointment.
Finalist invited for interview will do a presentation for the library
community.

Salary:  Twelve-month faculty appointment; rank and salary (in the $40's)
commensurate with experience and credentials.
