***Our Financial Specialist has been using one for awhile, for things like
newspapers which normally don't have a long time between invoicing and
expiration. Beginning this year, the job has been rolled over to me doing
it myself. I guess I'm not quite understanding what your question is.

We thought about it and decided not to. We do fund accounting (different
titles are charged against different account numbers), and there was no
way we would be able to keep it streight when the credit card statement
came in??

Dear Kim

This is a very interesting question. The accounts department at the
College has just given the library permission to purchase monographs and
subs. by Credit Card. The book acqusitions department has had no trouble
using it. But my subscription agents (Swets Blackwell and Teldan) are
unwilling to accept this form of payment. They claim its too expensive for
them!

I was quite disappointed because as you pointed out cheques get lost and
they take forever to order from the bank.
Maybe the "Serials Librarian community" could pressurise publishers and
agents to consider again.
Hope to hear more on this subject

Subject: Visa card for subscriptions/STOs

Our Monograph Acquisitions department has been using a Visa card for some
months now, and we are now considering one for our Serials Acquisitions
department. I'm wondering if anyone is using a Visa card (or other credit
card) to purchase subscriptions and/or standing orders on an ongoing
basis. I know many places use them to order monographs (or other one-time
purchases), but I'm interested in how a Visa could be used in the "and
continue" or "til forbid" sense. I'm thinking it might help alleviate
problems with checks getting lost in the mail, or taking forever to reach
foreign countries, etc.

Thanks for your help,

Kim Maxwell
