The program JPRINT was developed specifically to address this problem.

for an explanation.

Like many Jstor links, the above is a little on the long side,. You can also
get there by selecting any JSTOR page, and then select  "Set Preferences" in
the left-hand frame.

If you do not set preferences, upon selecting "Print" a page appears giving
the options.

We have been struggling with this problem for over a year.  We've thought
we had it figured out several times, but there seems to be a very specific
set of steps that must be followed for the document to print fully and in
a reasonable amount of time (I once saw a patron wait for 2 hours for a
15-page article).  And we've noticed that we can print fine from a staff
machine, then attempt to recreate the circumstances on a public machine at
reference and encounter problems.  i know this isn't all that helpful, but
rest assured that you are not the only one befuddled.
