The University of Maryland, Baltimore, Health Sciences and Human Services Library invites applications for a non-tenured faculty position. TITLE: Head of Cataloging SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience RESPONSIBILITIES: The Head of Cataloging reports to the Assistant Director for Resources Management and plans, directs and administers the work of 3 FTE responsible for the cataloging, classification and processing of Library materials. The Head will take an active role in the migration to an ExLibris integrated library system, contributing to the development and implementation of cataloging practices and policies in the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) consortium. The Head of Cataloging provides leadership in developing and implementing goals, policies and procedures for bibliographic control; develops and maintains quality control procedures for the cataloging and processing of materials; and reviews the work of and confers with staff to ensure comprehension of and compliance with local and national bibliographic standards, and with Library policies, procedures and objectives. The Head of Cataloging is a hands-on cataloger who instructs employees, provides on-the-job training, administers supervisory actions and controls, and evaluates staff performance. The Head of Cataloging creates original or adapts existing catalog records for materials in multiple formats according to AACR2rev and Library of Congress and National Library of Medicine policies and practices, using OCLC and MARC21 formats; assists in the development and management of automated bibliographic databases; cooperates with other departments to facilitate information retrieval; and participates in other Library projects as necessary. The Head maintains current knowledge of the development of national and international cataloging standards, advances in technology, and trends in academic librarianship. Maintains knowledge of and skill in applying cataloging rules and practices, and in database design and development. The Head of Cataloging compiles and reports monthly and annual cataloging statistics; serves on library-wide and university-wide committees, task forces and teams; and is active professionally. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: MLS from an ALA accredited school; three to five years professional library experience in cataloging department; 3 years supervisory or project management experience in a technical services setting. Recent and excellent cataloging skills and demonstrated ability to work independently or in a team. Experience with OCLC or other bibliographic utility; experience with an integrated library system, preferably Data Research Associates (DRA); thorough knowledge of: MARC21 bibliographic, authority, and holdings formats; Library of Congress (LC) and National Library of Medicine (NLM) policies and procedures; LC classification schedules and practices; the use, interpretation and application of LC Subject Headings (LCSH) and/or NLM Subject Headings (MeSH), and the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (2nd ed., 1998 revision) (AACR2rev). Excellent oral and written communication skills; effective analytical and organizational skills. QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED: Three to five years professional cataloging library experience in an academic or research library.
