Assistant Head, Cataloging Department

Between the mountains of the Blue Ridge and the shores of the Outer
Banks
lies North Carolina's Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel
Hill. One of the nation's premier concentrations of academic, corporate,
and public research, the area combines moderate year-round temperatures,
rolling hills, championship college athletics, and a rich diversity of
cultural events. While the Triangle consistently leads the lists of
desirable American communities, the North Carolina State University
Libraries has been recognized as the first recipient of the Association
of
College and Research Libraries’ Excellence in Academic Libraries Award
for
its teamwork, innovation, and continuous interaction with students and
faculty to further the educational mission of NC State University. In
the
past seven years, the NCSU Libraries has made an unprecedented rise
through the ranks of the Association of Research Libraries to its
current
position of 35th among the 111 member libraries.

The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position
of Assistant Head, Cataloging Department, to help blaze the path for
library catalog and database services in the post Dublin Core era.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Cataloging, shares in all aspects of management
and planning within the department, with responsibility for supervision
of
one of the Department’s three Sections: Monographs, Serials/Electronic
Resources, and Database Management. The Assistant Head assists in
in-house
training activities, in the development of staff work plans, and in the
annual performance appraisal process for support staff positions.
Professional staff in the department all work on collaborative projects
outside their home department, such as the MyLibrary@NCState portal,
reference work, and archival and Special Collections activities. In the
absence of the Department Head, the Assistant Head is responsible for
managing the department and representing Cataloging on Management
Council.
The Assistant Head is a member of the Collections and Technical Services
Heads group, serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams,
and is expected to be active professionally.

The Cataloging Department, which comprises 6 professional librarians,

support staff, and a Computing Consultant shared with Acquisitions and
Preservation, provides original and copy cataloging, authority work, and
planning for the Libraries’ DRA catalog. The NCSU Libraries catalogs
over
45,000 titles and 100,000 volumes each year, including books, serials,
audio-visual software, and e-resources using DRA Classic, the Library of
Congress classification system and LCSH. Planning for the
next-generation
version of the integrated library system has just begun and should
provide
an interesting challenge for this position. Through SOLINET, Cataloging
participates in preservation microfilming activities and in OCLC through
monthly batch loads. We are also active participants in the CORC
Project.
In the last two years, the Department has become involved in several
non-MARC text and image database projects in collaboration with the
Digital Library Initiatives Department and the Design Library.

Qualifications

Required: ALA-accredited MLS. At least three years professional
cataloging
experience. Demonstrated supervisory experience. Excellent oral,
written,
and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work independently
and
in teams. Experience with an integrated library system. Preferred:
Non-English language reading facility, particularly with modern European
languages.

37,000 print and electronic serials, and has a total annual budget of
approximately $20 million, with approximately $8 million allocated to
collections. The Libraries ranks first among Association of Research
Libraries members in spending for electronic materials as a percentage
of
materials expenditures and second only to Harvard in total expenditures
for electronic materials. The NCSU Libraries is the lead server site for
NC LIVE (North Carolina Libraries for Virtual Education), a multi-type
library initiative, making digital resources accessible to the citizens
of
North Carolina.

The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, and
the
Center for Research Libraries. Duke University, the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University and NC State
form the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined
resources of more than 13 million volumes, and collections budgets
totaling more than $29 million.

Salary and Benefits

The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience,
not less than $45,000 for this position. Librarians have academic status
without tenure or rank. Benefits include: 26 days vacation, 12 days sick
leave; health insurance (comprehensive major medical or HMO); and state,
TIAA/CREF or other retirement options. Additional and optional dental,
life, disability, deferred compensation, and legal plans are available.
Tuition waiver program for all campuses of The University of North
Carolina is available. Relocation allowance.
