Subject: SCCTP Serial Holdings Workshop

Dear Colleagues,

I am very happy to announce the availability of the Serials Cataloging
Cooperative Training Program's second course offering: Serial Holdings
Workshop. This workshop was prepared by Frieda Rosenberg (UNC, Chapel
Hill) and Thom Saudargas (College Center for Library Automation), two
noted authorities on holdings. The course is a guide to using the MARC 21
Format for Holdings Data, and the ANSI/NISO standard for holdings
statements. The course is system-neutral and is designed to help staff
understand the structure and design of MARC 21 holdings so that they can
better implement holdings in integrated library systems. There is time
reserved at the end for discussion of system-specific issues. The Serial
Holdings Workshop can be given in one day, or preferably, with a second
half day, which will allow time for more exercises and discussion.
Workshops based on the course materials have already been given by newly
trained SCCTP holdings trainers and evaluations have all been very
positive.

The course materials are available from the Library of Congress
Cataloging Distribution Service. As with the Basic Serials Workshop,
the course materials consist of an instructor's manual, a trainee
manual, and a set of PowerPoint slides. However, rather than
supplying printed manuals with binders, as was done with the Basic
Serials Workshop, CDS is distributing the Serial Holdings materials in
PDF as email file attachments. It will be the responsibility of
workshop sponsors to make the necessary copies and provide binders.
Cover and spine inserts for binders with clear sleeves are provided
with the course materials. A totally new pricing structure has been
developed based on the anticipated number of copies that will be made.
For complete details, see the SCCTP Web site:
http://lcweb.loc.gov/acq/conser/scctp/courdesc.html.

The Serial Holdings Workshop was designed to be given by SCCTP-trained
trainers. During January a train-the-trainer session was held for 29
trainers from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. For a list of the trainers in
your area, please contact Jean Hirons: jhir@loc.gov. The complete course
materials may also be purchased at no extra cost for in-house training or
self-study.

SCCTP is administered under the aegis of the CONSER (Cooperative Online
Serials) Program. Complete information and a list of upcoming workshops
is available at: http://lcweb.loc.gov/acq/conser/scctp.html.
