Position Announcement
Position:  Assistant Director for Technical Services
Open:  Immediately

General Description:  Portland State University is seeking a progressive
and energetic professional for the position of Assistant Director of
Technical Services.  This is a dynamic administrative position reporting
to the Director of the Millar Library and is responsible for planning,
coordinating, and managing the ongoing activities and operations of
Technical Services, including acquisitions, cataloging, preservation,
serials, database maintenance, and gifts.  Additionally, the Assistant
Director shares responsibilities for information resources management with
the Assistant Director for Public Services. Supervises 3 unit heads
(Acquisition, Cataloging, and Serials) who are responsible for 31 FTE
faculty, classified staff, and student workers.

Specific responsibilities:

· Provides leadership for Technical Services as well as th Millar Library.

· Works with and provides focus and support foracquisitions,
   cataloging, preservation, serials, and related activities of
   Technical Services.

· Collaborates closely with the Assistant Director for Public
  Services to provide focus and direction for the activities of
  information resources management as well as scholarly
  communication.  This includes the activities related to the
  assessment and selection of information resources in all
  formats, the management of these resources, the support
  of the selectors who are responsible for selecting these
  resources, and the strategic campus-wide dialogue on the
  relevance of scholarly communication. ·

 Collaborates closely with the Director of the Millar Library,
  the Assistant Director for Public Services, and the Head of
  Systems to cultivate an overall organizational environment in
  which creativity and innovation are valued.  Also, collaborates
  to cultivate a dynamic, fluid organization.

· Collaborates closely with the Assistant Director for Public
  Services to cultivate and promote effective communication.

· Participates in strategic initiatives to facilitate theLibrary's
  integration into statewide consortia, including ORBIS, Oregon's
  academic library union database.

· Facilitates the Library^Òs transition from Sirsi to Innovative
  Interfaces.

 Contributes to the work of professional associations, locally,
  regionally, and nationally.

· Contributes to the work of committees in the Library and on
  the campus.

Qualifications:

· Expertise and a record of progressively responsible leadership in the
work of Technical Services in an academic or in other research libraries.
· Expertise and experience in the organization or management of
information resources in all formats.
 Effective managerial, supervisory, analytical, and organizational skills.
· Effective communication skills.  Able to collaborate effectively
  with colleagues as well as faculty and students.
 Working knowledge of integrated library systems.
· ALA-accredited degree is required.  Second maste's degree
is preferred.

Salary/Benefits:  Salary is competitive.  This is a tenure-track position.
Librarians are members of the Academic Faculty and participate in the
Faculty Senate.  They have 22.5 days of vacation and several choices of
retirement (state & ORP) and medical plans.
