We have routinely altered our binding arrangements so that during the last
4-6 weeks of the semester we do not send any serials to the bindery. It
works well for the students and puts only a minor crimp in the workflow.

We usually take the opportunity to send other items to the bindery during
this period - mongraphs that need rebinding, special collection items,
etc.

We have implemented something similar. We send the majority of our things
to the bindery in August, September, December, January, April and May. That
way our students will have access during peak times for research. The other
months I still send things to the bindery only I send periodicals that can
be found online through many different ways. This way I can still try and
spread out my binding but the Students have the materials when they are
needed. We've just begun to try this and with the implementation of Project
Muse to our fall lineup it should become a bit easier to decide what to send
when. (This can be quite stressful as I'm sure you all know. You can't
please everyone!).
