-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Forthcoming NASIG Co-Sponsored Workshops Date: Fri, 5 Apr 2002 08:52:17 -0600 From: Connie Foster <connie.foster@WKU.EDU> Organization: Western Kentucky University SCCTP Basic Serials Cataloging Workshop and SCCTP Serials Holdings Workshop in Nevada The North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) and Bibliographic Center for Research (BCR) are co-sponsoring two SCCTP workshops on June 4-6 in Las Vegas Library, Nevada. 1. SCCTP Basic Serials Cataloging Workshop Basic Serials Cataloging is a two-day workshop covering the basic principles of serials cataloging for original and copy cataloging for print and electronic serials. The course focuses on the elements contained in the CONSER core record, as well as problem-solving and decision-making relative to serials cataloging. All materials are based on the CONSER Editing Guide and CONSER Cataloging Manual. This workshop is offered in cooperation with the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP). Under the auspices of the CONSER Program, the SCCTP provides authoritative training materials and trained serials experts to enable broad-ranging education in the field of serials cataloging. The course is designed for those new to serials: beginning serials catalogers and technicians and monograph catalogers working with serials. NOTE: Participants will be asked to fill out a needs assessment document prior to training. This document will help the instructors prepare for individual strengths and weaknesses. Pre-class exercises will be made available to participants upon registration. Instructor: Linda Gonzalez Site: Las Vegas Library, Nevada Date & Time: June 4-5, 2002, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Fee: $225 for BCR members and NASIG members $300 for nonmembers ($25 discount for early registration) Online registration available at http://www.bcr.org/workshop/register.html 2. SCCTP Serials Holdings Workshop This course provides participants with the key information needed to understand the basic principles for creating accurate holdings records and describing publication patterns. Course materials are based on the MARC 21 Format for Holdings Data (MFHD) and ANSI/NISO Z39.71-1999. The course includes background information on why holdings are important and a brief description of the development of the standards and exercises on creating formatted and free text holdings and publication patterns. The instructions and exercises are system-neutral, but the course includes time for discussion of local system implementation. The course is designed for those new to the MARC Holdings Format, including those who have created holdings records using other mechanisms (e.g., OCLC's local data record). It is designed primarily for staff who will create holding records, but is also useful for managers and system designers wishing to know more about the format and its uses. Instructor: Linda Gonzalez Site: Las Vegas Library, Nevada Date & Time: June 6, 2002, 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Fee : $95 for BCR members & NASIG members $150 for nonmembers ($10 discount for early registration) Online registration available at <http://www.bcr.org/workshop/register.html>.
