Predicting Publication Prices: Are Old Methods Still Relevant?

Sunday, June 16, 2002 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC) B310

Pricing, budgeting and bookkeeping - say these words to bibliographers,
collection developers, and acquisitions and serials librarians and their
ears may perk up and their eyes sparkle. Why is that? Because budgeting and
pricing are intricate arts as much as they are exact sciences; they are
about prediction, hence about our hopes for the future. Hear what a panel of
experts, including an academic librarian, a public librarian, an economist,
and a vendor representative have to say about ways we can and should decide
how best to predict the future in the uncertain arena of library materials
pricing and with the volatile world of electronic publishing steering our
course.

Gay N. Dannelly, Associate Director for Resources & Collection Services,
University of Notre Dame, will moderate panelists J. Randolph Call, Interim
Assistant Director for Technical Services, Detroit Public Library; Tina
Feick, Vice President, Customer Service, Swets Blackwell, Inc.; Dr. Mark
McCabe, School of Economics, Georgia Institute of Technology; and James G.
Neal, Vice President for Information Services & University Librarian,
Columbia University.

This program is sponsored by the ALCTS/Library Materials Price Index
Committee, and co-sponsored by ALCTS/Serials Section and by ACRL/Western
European Studies Section (WESS). A special thanks is due to Alfred Jaeger,
