The University of Virginia Library seeks a creative, energetic leader who
will help to shape the future of the Library's cataloging and metadata
endeavors in a dynamic and changing environment. The Database Quality
Coordinator will promote quality in the existing MARC environment, through

metadata standards for the emerging digital library. The University Library
wishes to attract individuals whose interest, presence, and contributions
will expand our commitment and ability to serve an increasingly diverse
user population.

Environment: The Library is a leader in developing the digital library,

recordings, computer files, and web materials), and perform periodicals
check-in/claiming, and binding and preservation activities. Departmental
planning and management is coordinated by the Cataloging Supervisory Team.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Director of Cataloging Services, the
Database Quality Coordinator manages authority control in VIRGO (the
University's online catalog); serves as the NACO coordinator for the
Library; facilitates VIRGO maintenance and enhancement projects; and acts
as a liaison to authority and database enrichment vendors. Works with
the Digital Library Working Group to incorporate authority files and/or
thesauri into the digital library and to assist in the development of
methods for standardization of metadata from diverse sources. Creates
original cataloging records, and original non-MARC metadata
records. Participates as a member of the Cataloging Supervisory Team. The
full position description can be found at
http://www.lib.virginia.edu/cataloging/about/DQjob.html.

Required Qualifications: Master's degree in library science or master's
degree in a related field. Experience with cataloging, authority control,
MARC formats, and automated library systems. Familiarity with metadata
standards (TEI, EAD, Dublin Core, etc.). Supervisory experience preferred.
Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; project
management skills; and the ability to work flexibly in a rapidly changing
environment. Strong service orientation. Commitment to professional growth
and development. Experience with NACO and the ability to work with foreign
languages preferred.

Salary and Benefits: Salary competitive, depending on experience. General
faculty status. The University of Virginia offers excellent benefits,
including 22 days of vacation and TIAA/CREF and other optional retirement
plans. Review of applications will begin on July 1, 2002 and continue
