We stopped checking in a small fraction of our 12,000 plus titles--some
ephemeral, freebie newsletter-type publications.  The main problem with
this seems to be that duplicate issues slip through.  Then the burden falls
on the shelvers to be aware that the extra issue can be recycled.

If you stop checking in issues, you may lose some of the measures that flag
missing issues.  I do think sometimes that it would be nice not to have to
check-in titles every day but that's the only way to keep accurate records
so far.

If you haven't heard already, you should be hearing shortly from Rick
Anderson who has done a couple of programs on that very issue (one was at
NASIG, so the presentation may be available via NASIG's website if you're a
member). As far as I know, there are no 'studies' per se with any hard data,
but hopeflly Rick will address the issue for you.
