2003 LCATS RESEARCH AWARD
ROBERT P. HOLLEY

Library Collections, Acquisitions, and Technical Services (LCATS) is
pleased to announce the recipient of the 2003 Research Award, Robert P.
Holley. Holley holds the title of Professor in the Library & Information
Science Program at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.

His proposal, "Changes in the Out-of-Print Market for Monographs," has
been funded as the 2003 Library Collections, Acquisitions, and Technical
Services Research Award. His study aims to gather data regarding the
changes in the out-of-print market for monographs published in the United
States, caused bythe emergence of Internet sites that combine listings from
many different OP vendors. The study will test two hypotheses:

        • OP monographs are much more readily available because of the Internet
vendors.
        • Increased accessibility and competition has reduced prices for OP
monographs.

The study will examine advertisements to purchase OP monographs in AB
Bookman's Weekly from the pre-Internet period to see if these monographs
are now available on the various Internet OP vendor sites. If the two
hypotheses are true, Holley will explore the implications fro libraries.

Holley's proposal was the clear choice of the five-member LCATS review
committee though it faces strong competition from an excellent pool of
submissions for the award. To quote one of the reviewers, "I like the
blending of the old with the new in this topic. It is refreshing to see a
proposal on out-of-print material. The effect of the Internet on the OP
market and library purchasing opportunities could influence the way
libraries select and acquire OP materials."
