Date: Thu, 6 Feb 2003 From: Marc Truitt (Univ. of Notre Dame) <mtruitt@nd.edu> Subject: New electronic discussion list for acquisitions automation issues ***Cross-posted to various discussion lists; kindly forgive the duplication.*** At the meeting of the ALCTS Acquisitions Section Automated Acquisitions Discussion Group, held at ALA Midwinter in Philadelphia, attendees expressed a desire to be able to continue discussions of acquisitions automation issues on a regular and ongoing basis. Currently, there is no place for such exchanges to take place. We are announcing the creation of AUTOACQ-L, a new electronic list that we hope will help address this need. PURPOSE : This list is intended to provide a forum for discussion of ideas and issues related to automation of library acquisitions and related processes. Our focus is broad, in the sense that we understand: 1) 'library acquisitions' encompasses not only traditional library ordering and receipt across all physical and intellectual formats, but also includes fiscal and budgetary issues, collection development/management, vendor performance monitoring and a broad spectrum of reporting issues; 2) 'automation' is understood to be platform- and ILS-independent. While discussion of specific systems and their capabilities is welcome, our focus is somewhat more conceptual and broader in scope than the solution(s) offered by particular vendors. We are especially interested in discussions that will encourage a standards-based approach to automated support of the functions described in 1), above. We welcome subscription and participation by all. We believe that this list will be of particular interest to library staff engaged in acquisitions, collection development/collection management and systems, as well as to library materials and systems vendors. HOW TO SUBSCRIBE : If you would like to subscribe to the new list, please send a message to: listserv@listserv.nd.edu Leave the subject line blank and do not include your signature file. In the message portion of your email, type : subscribe autoacq-l (your name) Example : subscribe autoacq-l Fred Flintstone The list is unmoderated. We hope to see you there soon!
