The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Cataloging Librarian, Serials and Electronic Resources. This position offers an early-career librarian the opportunity to join an ambitious cataloging operation that combines traditional AACR2/MARC based cataloging with emerging metadata standards. Effective access to electronic resources is a critical component of the Libraries' services, with more than 65,000 electronic titles in its collection. The Cataloging Department (http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/cataloging/cathome.htm) consists of 6 librarians, 16 staff, a Computing Consultant, and a Libraries Fellow. The NCSU Libraries, using Sirsi Unicorn, catalogs over 45,000 titles and 100,000 volumes each year, including books, serials, audio-visual software, and e-resources. The NCSU Libraries is an Enhance library within OCLC and has been an active participant in the CORC/Connexion Project, which is used to guide electronic resources through the selection process to the catalog. Responsibilities The Cataloging Librarian, Serials and Electronic Resources performs original and complex copy cataloging, including description and subject analysis, of print and electronic materials that are both serial and monographic in nature, with a focus on developing expertise in serials and electronic resource cataloging. Participates in the building and maintenance of the Libraries' name and subject authority files. Works collaboratively with other library staff to develop cross-collection search tools, currently within the Blue Angel MetaStar environment. All Cataloging Department librarians work with copy cataloging staff to provide LC subject headings and classification for copy lacking these access points, and to provide feedback on difficult copy cataloging decisions. Participates in department and library planning, serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. NCSU Librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Principal Cataloger. Qualifications Required ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in library or information science. Demonstrated interest in, and grasp of, current cataloging/metadata issues, as expressed by graduate coursework and/or practical experience. Ability to work effectively independently and in teams. Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing. Evidence of ability for ongoing professional development and contribution. Salary and Benefits The Libraries offers highly competitive salaries in recognition of applicable education and experience, not less than $36,000 for this position. Librarians have academic status without tenure or rank. Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC comprehensive major medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options. Additional and optional dental, life, disability, deferred compensation, and legal plans are available. Tuition waiver program for all campuses of The University of North Carolina is available.
