Serials Librarian

Illinois State University's Milner Library seeks a Serials Librarian to
join its staff of dedicated professionals.  This a full time, tenure
track position in the Bibliographic Services Division of Milner Library,
reporting to its division head.

University and Library:   As Illinois' oldest public university,
Illinois State University offers an outstanding education to 17,500
undergraduates in 35 disciplines, and 2,500 graduate students in diverse
master's and doctoral programs.  Milner Library supports those programs
with a service-focused staff of 110, a 425,000 square-foot building
opened in 1976 that houses 1.5 million volumes, extensive web-based and
graphical interface networks, and traditionally based technical support
units that utilize OCLC, Endeavor Voyager, INNOPAC, GOBI, and other
utilities.  Illinois State is located in Normal/Bloomington, a growing
community of 100,000 two hours from Chicago and three hours from St.
Louis or Indianapolis.

Responsibilities:   Performs original cataloging and classification of
serials and upgrades minimal-level cataloging found on the OCLC system
and in the ILCSO consortium's statewide union catalog.  Coordinates
serials acquisitions functions, including order placement, check-in and
claims.  Supervises 5 classified staff.  Serves as resource for 3
colleague cataloging faculty and 24 classified staff.  Participates in
formulating policy and procedures, particularly in assigned area.  Works
with librarians and staff in other areas of the library, including
binding personnel and public services, to address serials related
concerns.  Assists with complex copy cataloging as assigned.
Works to consolidate a recent merger of the acquisitions and cataloging
serials functions into a single unit.  Works occasionally at the General
Reference and Documents Desk (including some evening and weekend hours).
  Participates in the Library's general instruction programs.

Required Qualifications:   ALA accredited masters required.  Knowledge
of general cataloging forms, processes and techniques, and familiarity
with basic cataloging tools, including AACR2, LC subject headings, LC
and DDC classification, and MARC formats.  Knowledge of basic
acquisitions procedures.
Aptitude for accuracy and detail.  Strong commitment to customer service.
Ability to work effectively with all levels of patrons and colleagues.
Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in a strongly collegial and
participative environment and to manage diverse assignments in a rapidly
changing organization.  Ability to meet university requirements for
tenure, including scholarship and service.

Preferred Qualifications:   Second master's degree, a certificate of
advanced studies, or a doctorate (required for promotion and tenure).
Technical knowledge of and experience working with OCLC and Endeavor
Voyager ILS.  Experience in serials cataloging and/or serials
acquisitions.  Reading knowledge of a foreign language.

Salary and Benefits:   $40,000.  Salary negotiable depending on
education and qualifications.  24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave, and
11 paid holidays per year.  Medical, dental, and life insurance plans.
