FACULTY OPENING
Associate Director, Cataloging Services Department

The University of Virginia Library seeks a creative, energetic leader
who will help to shape the future of the Library's metadata and
cataloging endeavors in the Library of Tomorrow, integrating traditional
and digital services. The University Library wishes to attract
individuals whose contributions will expand our commitment and ability
to serve an increasingly diverse user population.

Environment: The Library is a leader in developing the digital library,
with electronic centers for texts; digital images, music and media;
geospatial and statistical data; and rare books and manuscripts. The
Library system consists of eleven libraries, with independent libraries
for health sciences, law, and business. The libraries serve 12,000
undergraduates, 6,000 graduate students and 1,600 teaching faculty. The
University and the Library have a strong commitment to achieving
diversity among faculty and staff. The Library's homepage can be
accessed at http://www.lib.virginia.edu. The Neoclassical buildings of
founder Thomas Jefferson's Academical Village still serve as the center
of the University's Grounds and as a unique backdrop for teaching,
learning and research. (For a virtual tour of the Grounds, visit
http://www.virginia.edu/uvatours/slideshow/)

The Cataloging Services Department is located in Alderman Library and is
the central cataloging area for most of the materials added to the
University Library collections. Staff create and maintain original and
copy cataloging and holdings records for various formats (print
monographs and serials, electronic resources, microforms, maps, video
and sound recordings), and perform periodicals check-in/claiming, and
binding and preservation activities.

Responsibilities:
The Associate Director assists the Director of Cataloging Services in
managing the centralized cataloging operation and related technical
services functions. Participates in establishing departmental
priorities, the allocation of personnel and resources, and long-range
departmental planning. Directly supervises three faculty and three
paraprofessional staff, and reports to the Director. Coordinates the
cataloging of electronic resources and other non-print materials and the
creation of metadata records for the library's digital library database.
Acts as the primary departmental liaison to digital library
departments and to the electronic centers; serves on digital library
committees to develop metadata standards and workflows, and other
digital library policies and procedures. The full position description
can be found at
http://www.lib.virginia.edu/cataloging/about/AssocDirJob.html.

or master's degree in a related field. Demonstrated competence in
management and supervision. Experience with cataloging, authority
control, MARC formats, and automated library systems. Familiarity with
metadata standards (TEI, EAD, Dublin Core, etc.) and mark-up languages
(SGML, XML, etc.).
Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, and
the ability to work flexibly in a rapidly changing environment. Strong
service orientation. Commitment to professional growth and development.

Salary and Benefits: $40,000 or higher, depending on qualifications.
General faculty status. The University of Virginia offers excellent
benefits, including 22 days of vacation and TIAA/CREF and other optional
