FACULTY OPENING Associate Director, Cataloging Services Department The University of Virginia Library seeks a creative, energetic leader who will help to shape the future of the Library's metadata and cataloging endeavors in the Library of Tomorrow, integrating traditional and digital services. The University Library wishes to attract individuals whose contributions will expand our commitment and ability to serve an increasingly diverse user population. Environment: The Library is a leader in developing the digital library, with electronic centers for texts; digital images, music and media; geospatial and statistical data; and rare books and manuscripts. The Library system consists of eleven libraries, with independent libraries for health sciences, law, and business. The libraries serve 12,000 undergraduates, 6,000 graduate students and 1,600 teaching faculty. The University and the Library have a strong commitment to achieving diversity among faculty and staff. (For a virtual tour of the Grounds, visit http://www.virginia.edu/uvatours/slideshow/) The Cataloging Services Department is located in Alderman Library and is the central cataloging area for most of the materials added to the University Library collections. Staff create and maintain original and copy cataloging and holdings records for various formats (print monographs and serials, electronic resources, microforms, maps, video and sound recordings), and perform periodicals check-in/claiming, and binding and preservation activities. Responsibilities: The Associate Director assists the Director of Cataloging Services in managing the centralized cataloging operation and related technical services functions. Participates in establishing departmental priorities, the allocation of personnel and resources, and long-range departmental planning. Directly supervises three faculty and three paraprofessional staff, and reports to the Director. Coordinates the cataloging of electronic resources and other non-print materials and the creation of metadata records for the library's digital library database. Acts as the primary departmental liaison to digital library departments and to the electronic centers; serves on digital library committees to develop metadata standards and workflows, and other digital library policies and procedures. Required Qualifications: Master's degree in library science (preferred) or master's degree in a related field. Demonstrated competence in management and supervision. Experience with cataloging, authority control, MARC formats, and automated library systems. Familiarity with metadata standards (TEI, EAD, Dublin Core, etc.) and mark-up languages (SGML, XML, etc.). Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work flexibly in a rapidly changing environment. Strong service orientation. Commitment to professional growth and development. Salary and Benefits: $40,000 or higher, depending on qualifications. General faculty status.
