Subject: Library Assistant IV, Cambridge, MA From: Jennifer Collom <jennifer@gentoo.harvard.edu> Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2003 15:55:27 -0500 JOB POSTING Requisition #16228 Position Title: Library Assistant IV Harvard University Library, CONSER Office Salary Grade: 51 Hours per Week: 17.5, part time position Duties & Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Head of the CONSER Office, catalogs serials for HOLLIS with copy from OCLC. Performs a variety of duties involving serial records, including basic editing and maintenance of CONSER records in all formats and in accordance with CONSER and other standards. Searches HOLLIS, OCLC and other appropriate databases for cataloging copy and authority records. May perform supervised original cataloging and classification of straightforward materials. Completes necessary holdings record creation and maintenance work. Enters prepared NACO authority work to the National Authority File and in HOLLIS. Gathers and reports University-wide serials cataloging statistics. Communicates with staff working with serial publications at many varied Harvard libraries. Performs related job duties as required. NOTE: This position requires a minimum of 2 hours per day working on the computer. The CONSER Office coordinates Harvard's participation in CONSER (Cooperative Online Serials), a national program which cooperatively catalogs serial publications using standards and guidelines agreed on by program participants. The Office provides training and interpretation of national cataloging policy, authenticates records contributed by Harvard to the program, and, for some libraries, provides cataloging, holdings, and name authority work. Required Education, Experience, Skills Bachelor's degree preferred; experience in using an online catalog system in an academic library setting highly desirable; familiarity with MARC format and OCLC preferred, demonstrated competency in keyboarding/typing required; fluency in English and a working knowledge of at least one western European language required, two or more preferred; ability to pay close attention to detail essential; must be flexible, versatile, and able to work cooperatively in a small team environment; must have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and be able to perform complicated, routine tasks with minimal supervision.
