ALCTS New Supervisor's Workshop in Seattle Kirsten Ahlen 28 Oct 2003 21:45 UTC
Apologies for cross-posting. Please pass this along to any who may be interested in this workshop. A Supervisor's Academy: Essentials of Supervision for the Professional Librarian November 17 - 18, 2003 from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Holiday Inn Seattle Center, Seattle, WA The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of the American Library Association, is pleased to announce its newest workshop. It is not easy being the boss - one day you are a professional technical services librarian and the next day you are promoted to manager and your world changes. If not handled correctly, new supervisors will make mistakes that may make their new job a living hell, ruin relationships with former colleagues, as well as disrupt the organization. Mistakes like over-managing, becoming a workaholic, or believing that she is irreplaceable can lead to disaster for any manager and for her organization. Great managers may be born, but the overwhelming majority are made into leaders through training and positive work experiences. Managers need to understand the people they supervise and treat them as their most important customers, building relationships that are beneficial to both the manager and the employee. Managers must help all workers to succeed and that the best way to accomplish this is through positive communication and employee empowerment. Taught by William Sannwald, Assistant to the City Manager and Manager of Library Design and Development, engaging institute speaker, and former Library Administration and Management (LAMA) President, this full two-day workshop provides library managers with the skills and tools required to go from being a library technical expert to a supervisor. It explores modern management techniques ranging from communication to understanding organizational culture in order to ease the transition from being a professional to becoming a manager of professionals. The workshop is participatory with discussion, role-play, exercises, and videos. Advance registration fees are $325 for ALCTS members; $350 for ALA members; $375 for non-members; and $165 for full-time students. Advance registration ends November 3rd.
