Catalog Librarian Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery University of Maryland, Baltimore County THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY: UMBC, an honors university serving more than 10,000 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students, is one of two public universities in Maryland within the "doctoral/research university-extensive" Carnegie classification. Located just outside Baltimore and 45 minutes from Washington, DC, the campus is growing rapidly under dynamic leadership. The University's ongoing commitment to strengthen the Library has led to investment in extensive technological development and online resources, complementing a superb facility enlarged and renovated in 1995, and holding more than 850,000 volumes, 30,000 audio and 100,000 slide pieces, as well as numerous other materials formats and seating for 1,000 library users. RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent will lead and manage staff responsible for providing description and access for library materials. Specific duties include: performing original cataloging and some complex copy cataloging of materials in print format; supervising staff assigned to cataloging and bibliographic control functions; monitoring developments in cataloging and access; planning, implementing, and maintaining effective and efficient methods for cataloging library materials in print format; collaborating in establishing cataloging policy and procedures in a consortial environment and in the context of national and international standards; creating, implementing, reviewing and revising local cataloging policies and procedures; consulting and collaborating with other staff and administrators as appropriate; documenting procedures and policies; and performing other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master's of Library Science (MLS) degree. Professional cataloging experience in an academic or research library in an automated environment and experience with AACR2r, LC subject headings and classification, MARC21 formats and a major bibliographic utility are required. Must have the ability to: work collaboratively in a team environment and to manage a variety of priorities; work independently, as well as in team and production environments; and to strengthen library services to a diverse user group. Supervisory experience and strong communication, organizational and problem-solving skills are required. Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages, experience in the cataloging of music scores, and experience with an integrated library system, preferably Aleph, are preferred. SALARY: This is a 12 month faculty appointment at anticipated rank of Librarian I or II. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Comprehensive benefits are included. The successful candidate will be expected to meet library and university requirements for reappointment, promotion, and regular status. While the salary range has not yet been established, the position will have a minimum salary of $40,000 per year if hired at the Librarian I level.
