The MIT Libraries are seeking an energetic and innovative librarian to
provide leadership and expertise in the management and development of
cataloging and metadata services.  The Cataloging and Metadata
Services department is newly configured, merging units that were
previously in separate departments.  A recently developed Cataloging
Mission Statement

reflects an expanded concept of cataloging and scope of services. The
department brings together units that carry out monograph and serials
cataloging for a wide range of formats, including print and on-line
resources, maps, GIS, video, and sound recordings.  The Serials
Cataloging Section participates in the CONSER Program. The department
also manages vendor record loading, authorities and catalog
maintenance activities, and SFX linking.  It includes a Metadata Unit
that provides services to MIT customers on a cost-recovery basis.  The
Department Head reports to the Associate Director for Collection
Services.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Department Head will be responsible for
managing traditional services and envisioning new services, sometimes
in collaboration with other Libraries' or Institute initiatives, such
as DSpace, OpenCourseWare, or the SIMILE Project.  He or she will
manage a group of 22 highly competent staff, developing processes and
providing services that best support the needs of the MIT community of
users, and continually monitoring and improving effectiveness.
Outreach to public services librarians and project managers is an
important component of the Department Head's responsibility.  In
addition, he or she will work in close collaboration with the Head of
Acquisitions and Licensing, in a new matrix structure, to facilitate
communication and decision-making across departments. The successful
candidate will be a competent, flexible manager, with an interest in
working in an environment that provides opportunities for shaping
future directions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  ALA accredited MLS or MLIS degree. Seven to
ten years of increasingly responsible relevant experience, preferably
in a research university environment. A record of successful
management and supervisory responsibility.  Excellent interpersonal
and communication skills.  Evidence of leadership potential.

HIRING SALARY:  $70000 minimum.  Actual salary based on qualifications
and experience.
