Materials Acquisition and Control
Area Studies Team Leader

The University of Minnesota University Libraries are a vibrant system of

The Libraries invites applications for the position of Area Studies Team
Leader in the Materials Acquisition and Control Department (MAC).  MAC
consists of teams which acquire and provide bibliographic access to all
formats of material. The Libraries integrated system is Ex Libris Aleph.
The Libraries particularly encourages the candidacy of individuals with
experience in multicultural and multiracial environments.

CONTEXT:  The Area Studies Team is responsible for ordering, receipting,
paying for, and providing bibliographic access to materials in a variety of
subjects and languages for these areas: East and South Asia, Central,
Eastern and Western Europe, Middle East, Scandinavia, and Ibero-America.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Manage and supervise a team of approximately 10 full time staff,
including 3 professional librarians and several FTE students.
· Serve as a member of the MAC leadership group in setting policies and
procedures, budgeting, staffing, workflow, measurement and analysis,
communication and public relations.
· Perform original cataloging for materials in Western European or other
languages.
· Collaborate with others in the Libraries to investigate, propose, and
implement new approaches for creating and manipulating bibliographic data.
· Play an important role in developing innovative methods to describe
information in all formats and to work with units across the Libraries and
the campus on various projects.

This person reports to the Director of Materials Acquisition and Control.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited institution (or foreign equivalent);
supervisory experience; experience with OCLC and/or RLIN; original
cataloging experience in an integrated library system; knowledge of AACR2,
LCSH, LC classification, and MARC21 tagging; knowledge of current
developments in cataloging, metadata standards, and information retrieval,
and experience with emerging technologies; demonstrated ability to function
in a collaborative, service-oriented environment and to adapt to a
frequently changing environment; excellent interpersonal, communication,
organizational, and problem-solving skills; initiative and flexibility;
knowledge of one language besides English; an aptitude for complex,
analytical and detailed work; demonstrated ongoing commitment to
professional development and engagement in the profession

Preferred: Technical services experience in an academic or research library
environment; experience with the Ex Libris Aleph system; background in
cataloging of electronic resources and outsourcing of cataloging;
demonstrated facility in adopting and developing new technological skills;
experience acquiring, cataloging and/or processing material non-English
languages acquired from foreign vendors.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Full-time, 12-month, continuous appointment track,
academic/professional position with appointment at the Assistant Librarian
rank.  The Libraries offers a competitive salary, commensurate with
qualifications and experience, for this position.  Excellent benefits and
