Licensing Review and Negotiation ARL/OLMS Online Lyceum Course May17-June 18, 2004 <http://www.arl.org/training/licensing.html> The Association of Research Libraries is pleased to again offer its popular Online Lyceum course, Licensing Review and Negotiation. In this exciting but uncertain environment of electronic information resources, in addition to copyright, libraries must now manage the use of their information resources under the terms agreed to in a license. Because licenses are standard business practice for providing access to and use of electronic information in library settings, we must pay attention to both the details and the cumulative effect of these agreements on users, institutions, and the process of scholarly communication. This Online Lyceum course will: * Introduce you to the legal underpinnings of the licensing of electronic information resources * Alert you to the players and factors at your home institution that affect licensing * Walk you through specific terms, conditions, and areas that make up a license * Give you hints on how to negotiate the terms you need * Tell you what needs to be done after the license is signed During this course, you will also build a toolkit of materials that will help you understand licensing as it directly relates to your institution. You will be able to refer to the toolkit as you progress through the course modules and it will serve as a useful resource in the future during real-world licensing situations. The toolkit includes not only important factual information but also questions you need to ask before entering into any license agreement. Licensing Review & Negotiation incorporates elements of both synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous interaction with course facilitators and a global peer network of up to 30 learners via a course bulletin board, chat rooms, and regular e-mail. This course also includes interaction with course facilitators via the submission of assignments that will be reviewed and returned with feedback. Target Audience: Librarians and other institutional staff who are relatively new to the process of reviewing and negotiating licenses for electronic resources on behalf of the library, the institution as a whole, or a consortium. Register Now! Registration Deadline: May 7, 2004 $500 for ARL members/$550 for nonmembers For more information about this or other ARL/OLMS Online Lyceum courses, please visit our Web site at: <http://www.arl.org/training/lyceum.html> or contact Karen A.
