electronic journals Julia Todd 20 Jul 2004 18:17 UTC

Hello. As I'm new to this list, please forgive me if this topic
duplicates past discussions.

I'd like to know how you handle displaying journal subscriptions
purchased in paper that also come with an online version. We have a very
small serials collection, about 350 titles, but about 100 of these
include an online equivalent. I'm finding that it takes a long time to
add 856 fields in the bib record with holdings information and
continuously update this information bi-annually.

I realize a lot of you will have link resolvers that you will enter this
sort of information into, but at present we still use our catalog to
display journal holding information that also is available via JSTOR,
Project Muse, and through the publisher...

Is there an easier way to notify users of an electronic version? Do you
think that users will most likely look in an aggregate database anyway
for this sort of information, and that adding the 856 field to the bib
record is a lot of extra work for not a lot of gain?

Any input on this topic would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time.
