Reporting to the Head of Original and Special Materials Cataloging, the incumbent will provide full (or other appropriate level) original cataloging in a variety of print, non-print and digital formats in a variety of subject areas. This position will also have some responsibility for performing tasks related to electronic resources management (e-journals and databases). The position will also supervise serials-related projects. The Libraries participate in BIBCO, CONSER, NACO and SACO. Catalogers contribute to planning, policy and procedure development and are expected to keep abreast of methods, guidelines, and approaches for the bibliographic control of library materials. Columbia's extensive digital library activities provide many opportunities for catalogers to work in non-traditional ways with colleagues in special collections, academic computing, Electronic Publishing Initiative at Columbia, Center for New Media Teaching and Learning, and the Center for Research in Information Access. The Original and Special Materials Cataloging Department (10.5 professionals and 8.5 support staff) provides original cataloging for selected monographs plus cataloging for all serials, non-book formats and electronic resources, and specialized materials such as rare books. The Libraries currently receive over 60,000 serial titles and provide access to over 20,000 electronic journals. Requirements are: accredited MLS or equivalent; working knowledge of cataloging principles and procedures including AACR2R, LC Subject Headings and Classification, and MARC 21 formats; working knowledge of standard bibliographic and other reference tools; strong working knowledge in two European languages; broad subject background; and familiarity with a range of automated processing activities. Additional requirements include effective verbal and written communication skills; experience in procedure development and writing documentation; good organization skills; and aptitude for complex, analytical and detailed work. Highly desirable qualifications include previous serials cataloging experience at a professional level; previous CONSER experience; experience with Voyager, OCLC and/or RLIN; experience in a large research library; and demonstrated interest in the issues and standards related to metadata.
