POSITION: Associate Dean for Collections and Technical Services

DESCRIPTION: The University of Kentucky Libraries seeks applications and
nominations for a visionary and creative senior librarian and
administrator to provide dynamic leadership as Associate Dean for
Collections and Technical Services. The institution's comprehensive
research programs and extensive undergraduate curricula are enriched by
a land grant mission and programs of community engagement. The Libraries
are an integral part of the campus life and a significant collaborator
within the state, national and international library communities. See

Position Summary and Responsibilities: The Associate Dean for
Collections and Technical Services reports to the Dean of Libraries.
Major responsibilities of the Associate Dean include collections policy,
acquisitions, cataloging and metadata, serials, government documents,
and electronic resource coordination. The Associate Dean is responsible
for the successful planning, organization, policy development,
implementation and direction of all aspects of these areas in a dynamic
environment with an emphasis on user-focused services. The Associate
Dean is a member of the Libraries' executive group and represents the
Dean as appropriate.

Overall responsibilities include developing strategic directions with
department heads for acquisitions, serials, collections, cataloging,
government documents, and electronic resources; fostering effective
working relationships with library and academic colleagues; enhancing
and assessing service quality; and playing a leading role in
library-wide planning initiatives. Specific responsibilities include
leading a team of area heads in re-designing work processes and services
in support of learning, teaching and research; and managing and
directing the Libraries' collections budget of $9 million. The Associate
Dean provides leadership and training to academic liaisons (who work
closely with the Associate Dean for Research and Education) in their
function as collection managers, and initiates library-wide discussion
on collection management and development as well as scholarly
communication.

Qualifications

Required: MLIS degree from an ALA-Accredited program is required with a
minimum of five years experience in administering a major unit within a
research library system. Demonstrated experience with or knowledge of
technical services and collections.

The successful candidate should have evidence of a strong commitment to
collections and technical services; substantial library experience in
progressively more responsible positions; demonstrated knowledge of
collections and technical services issues and trends; demonstrated
leadership to effect change in a challenging and complex information
environment, with vision, creativity and innovation; management style
that is inclusive and empowers others to excel; effective supervisory
experience; demonstrated initiative in program development; demonstrated
ability to work well with a diverse employee and user community;
demonstrated ability to work within a collegial framework; strong
analytical and decision-making skills; demonstrated knowledge of the
application of information technology; experience with major automated
systems; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication
skills; evidence of ability to attain promotion and tenure in the UK
Libraries system; the ability to work with a diverse staff; and the
ability to represent the UK Libraries within the University and to
external audiences.

Desired: Experience using the Voyager integrated library system.
Experience with or knowledge of government documents.

Salary and Benefits: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Tenure track position, faculty rank, 12 month appointment, 22 days

Library: Located in the beautiful bluegrass region of Kentucky, the
University of Kentucky Libraries system includes the main William T. Young
Library, Medical Center Library, Law Library, Special Collections and
Archives, Agricultural Information Center, Little Fine Arts Library,
Architecture Library, Education Library, Engineering Library and five
science libraries. Combined holdings total more than 3 million volumes.
The system has a staff of 80 librarians and 109 support staff and serves a
student body of 28,000. The UK Libraries use the Voyager integrated
library system. Library membership includes ARL, SOLINET, ASERL, and the
Center for Research Libraries. The University of Kentucky Library System
is a regional depository for government publications.
