                        CATALOG LIBRARIAN &
                   CLINICAL ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

The University of Illinois at Chicago, a comprehensive Research I
institution located near Chicago's historic Loop, with a student
enrollment of 25,000 and offering doctoral degrees in 45 areas and
master's degrees in 79, seeks a talented and innovative librarian to head
the Catalog Department.

The Catalog Department is located in the University's Richard J. Daley
Library, but serves every site of the University Library system
(including the Libraries of the Health Sciences). The department
consists of six FTE professionals and fourteen support staff. It is
responsible for original cataloging; editing, upgrading, and enhancement
of OCLC member records; any LC copy cataloging that is not supplied by
vendors; all NLM copy cataloging; pre-order searching, verification, and
online record creation for select materials; authority control in local
and national files; database maintenance; and metadata creation for
electronic resources. Cataloging is performed in all bibliographic
formats and many languages and is entered into UICCAT, UIC's local
catalog within a 65-library Voyager state system.

The Catalog Librarian is responsible for the management of the
department, for planning and implementing new initiatives that will
improve service and efficiency, for coordinating multi-unit projects, and
for contributing to management of technical services and of the Library.
The successful candidate will maintain catalog quality and cooperative
efforts such as OCLC Enhance (UIC is a charter contributor for books) and
NACO, and may lead efforts to contribute to SACO, BIBCO, and CONSER.

Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA
accredited library school program; three to five years of increasingly
responsible supervisory experience in cataloging; appreciation for the
value of organizing knowledge in a systematic way; and demonstrated
ability to meet University standards in research, publication, and
service commensurate with a clinical faculty appointment.

Additional Desirable Qualifications: Experience with materials published
in a variety of formats, especially electronic resources, music scores,
and serials; familiarity with cataloging health sciences materials using
MeSH and NLM classification; knowledge of one or more foreign languages.

SALARY/RANK/CONTRACT: Salaries are competitive and based on education
and experience; faculty appointments in the UIC Library begin at $40,000;
faculty status; twelve month appointment; 24 days vacation; two weeks
annual sick leave with additional disability benefits; 11 paid holidays;
medical insurance (contribution based on annual salary; coverage for
dependents may be purchased); a dental plan is available; life insurance
paid for by the State; participation in one of the retirement options of
the Illinois State Universities Retirement System compulsory (8% of
salary is withheld and is tax exempt until withdrawal); no Social
Security coverage but Medicare payment required; physical examination at
University Health Service is required upon appointment.

For fullest consideration apply by November 5, 2004 with cover letter,
supporting resume and the name and address of at least three references
