SERIALS CATALOGER (Part-time)
HARVARD LAW SCHOOL LIBRARY

  Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Cataloging Services Librarian in the Law
School Library, catalogs serials in English and other European languages.
Catalogs in various formats, including print, electronic publications, and
microform, using AACR2, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, Library
of Congress Subject Headings, the LC and local classification systems,
CONSER editing guidelines, and the OCLC and RLIN bibliographic utilities.
Edits contributed copy for serials from other RLIN and OCLC libraries to
full CONSER and AACR2 standards, and ensures that quality bibliographic
records are created through OCLC for inclusion in HOLLIS, Harvard's online
catalog system. Contributes authority information to the HOLLIS authority
files and the LC Name Authority File via NACO. Compiles and encodes serial
holdings information in the MARC holdings format for HOLLIS. Works on
special recataloging and reclassification projects as required. Together
with the other serials catalogers, organizes and maintains the serials
cataloging backlog. Communicates with the Serials Librarian and other
Serials staff in answering inquiries and resolving serials bibliographic
problems. Keeps abreast of the latest standards and developments in serials
cataloging, and serves on committees in the Law Library and the Harvard
University Library system as appropriate.

This is a part-time position at .57 FTE, comparable to a 20 hour workweek.

Required Education, Experience and Skills:      Requires MLS from an ALA
accredited library school; good reading knowledge of at least one European
language; 2 years of experience cataloging serials in a large academic
library; experience with AACR2, MARC formats, authority control, and with
RLIN or OCLC. Must work with accuracy and close attention to detail. Letter
