[Please excuse duplication] The ALCTS Cataloging Norms Discussion Group will present the following program at ALA Midwinter on Saturday January 21, 2006, 1:30PM-3:30PM, Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center, Room 218. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TITLE: Eliminating Redundant Entries in Bibliographic Records SPEAKER: Qiang Jin Cataloging Librarian & NACO Coordinator University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign ABSTRACT: This paper proposes to eliminate redundant entries in bibliographic records in order to help users find resources by heads of state (etc.) through the authority structure of the catalog in the context of the other editions and translations of the work of the other works of the author to fulfill the second objective of the catalog. Qiang Jin is an original cataloging librarian and NACO coordinator at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research has been and continues to be focused on the study of authority control issues in order to help users access resources in online catalogs for their curricular and research needs. She investigates issues from the theoretical perspective of cataloging and recommends new ways for catalogers to help users locate resources effectively and efficiently in the Web environment. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TITLE: Measurement of Cataloging Accuracy SPEAKER: Rebecca Routh Head, Monographic Acquisitions and Rapid Cataloging Department Northwestern University Library ABSTRACT: The Monographic Acquisitions and Rapid Cataloging (MARC) Department of Northwestern University Library has implemented a model of cataloging revision designed to calculate the rate of staff error in editing catalog copy, assigning valid Dewey call numbers, and performing authority control. Rebecca Routh will discuss the reasons behind their attempt to measure cataloging accuracy and the results it has brought. The worksheet used to identify and calculate cataloging errors will be reviewed as well as the pros and cons of investing in such an exercise. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TITLE: Multilingual digital libraries: viewing from MARC, Google, Babel Fish, etc. SPEAKER: Charlene Chou Serials Cataloger, OSMC Dept. Columbia University ABSTRACT: Charlene Chou's presentation attempts to evaluate the trend in digital libraries with emphasis on multilingual information, yet consists of more perspectives, e.g. search engines on the Web, and is not limited to MARC only. One of the key factors in implementing a global library is the capability to do multilingual searching. Do Google or other search engines have all the capabilities for doing it, or can the library community make a very significant contribution to the formation of the global library through the development or implementation of Unicode and metadata authority schema, etc.?
