METADATA LIBRARIAN

The University of California, Santa Barbara, one of ten campuses of the
University of California system, is seeking a Metadata Librarian.  The
successful candidate must be innovative, creative, energetic, and self
motivated.  The University is ranked as a category 1-research university
by the Carnegie Commission, and is an elected member of the Association of
American Universities.  The library memberships include ARL, CLIR, SPARC,
and OCLC.  The library is also a participant in the California Digital
Library.  The library collections include over two million volumes,
government documents, microforms, sophisticated electronic resources, and
numerous Special Collections.

Librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara are professional
academic appointees who accrue vacation at the rate of two days per month
and sick leave at the rate of one day per month.  The University has an
excellent retirement system, which is coordinated with Social Security.  A
selection of group health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans are
offered by the University.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Head of Cataloging and Database Management, the Metadata
Librarian is responsible for cataloging, training, project management,
digital initiatives, coordination of practices and procedures, supervision
and management.  In addition, the incumbent will serve as the Assistant
Head of Cataloging.

The Metadata Librarian provides bibliographic control of complex materials
in a diverse range of formats and various languages, using appropriate
metadata (MARC or other standards).  Participates in project management
and planning of cataloging workflow and procedures.  He/she hires, trains
and supervises the work of a number of employees in the Department.
Serves as a consultant and trainer for technical services staff in new
processes, as well as coordinates and manages documentation of cataloging
and metadata practices and procedures.

Provides leadership and expert knowledge on all metadata including MARC,
AACR2, LCSH, and other metadata framework and content standards.
Incumbent will assist in planning and implementing initiatives to forward
to UC system wide goals for creating new cataloging environments.

Assumes responsibility as the lead cataloging specialist for digital
planning projects.   Works with library committees on evaluation of
projects for proposed collection digitization.  Assists with archival and
repository management of digital projects

QUALIFICATIONS:

 Required:  ALA accredited MLS.  Substantial cataloging experience in
multiple formats.  Knowledge and expertise in appropriate cataloging and
authority standards.  Working knowledge of metadata schemes other than
MARC (e.g. XML, EAD, TEI, DC).  Experience with supervision, teaching and
training staff.  Knowledge of the structure and management of online
catalogs.  Knowledge of at least one foreign language.  Excellent
organizational skills, proven problem-solving ability and flexibility.
Knowledge of current and emerging trends in bibliographic control.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.  Ability
to work in a collaborative team environment.

Preferred:  Experience in an online cataloging environment, preferably the
ExLibris system.  Experience with managing digital materials.  Knowledge
of web authorizing software.  Knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese.

Salary commensurate with qualifications, minimum $50,208.  Consideration
