Re: dropping "indexed in"? Dickerson, Eugene (NIH/NLM) [E] 14 Jun 2006 21:09 UTC

Hi, Patricia.

All of the 510 fields for indexing and abstracting services, with the
exception of Chemical Abstracts, were removed from CONSER records in
2003. The information was really out-of-date and wasn't being
maintained.

NLM creates 510 fields locally, but only for our products, Index
Medicus, MEDLINE, and PubMed.

You may want to consider deleting the information from your records if
it hasn't been kept up-to-date.

An online source such as JAKE (Jointly Administered Knowledge
Environment) http://jake.med.yale.edu/index.jsp
Might be a place to look for this kind of indexing service coverage.

Subject: [SERIALST] dropping "indexed in"?

I've noticed that many libraries do not include "Indexed In" lists for
their serials records. Ours are in the 510 note field and usually list
print indexes such as Reader's Guide; ABI Inform, etc. Many libraries
include their Marc format in the opac, and I do not see this information
there either.

So my question du jour is: should I keep this info, but hide it from
public view? or should I delete this stuff? then what happens if
someone wants to do a retrospective search? how will they know which
indexes to go back to?

What is the collective wisdom on this topic?

 Thanks,
