Re: Die Casting Engineering numbering problem Crank, Richard L 13 Sep 2006 17:32 UTC

We don't subscribe to this title, but I train staff as a general rule to
check in a mis-numbered item w/ the numbering on the piece (mainly
because if it's indexed anywhere that's the numbering the indexer has &
usually uses) but add an item record note (we use Voyager & create item
records for nearly all receipts) describing the numbering discrepancy.

In the case Anna describes, I would do that, then change the Nov.
prediction to chronology only and add a check-in note to route the next
receipt to staff to investigate and make necessary fixes to issue
records, item records, and prediction, when possible. Sometimes they're
fixed with the next receipt, sometimes after a few issues, and
occasionally never.

Anna -- You might consider emailing the editor (I assume an email
address is on the piece) and find out if there is any logic to their
change in numbering. You might also mention it's not only difficult for
libraries, but confusing for users.
