ANNOUNCING

CALL FOR MENTORS

THE ACRL DR. E.J. JOSEY SPECTRUM SCHOLAR MENTOR PROGRAM TRAINING TO TAKE
PLACE AT ALA MIDWINTER (SEATTLE) FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 2007, 9:00 AM-12:00
NOON LOCATION - TO BE ANNOUNCED

If you are interested in developing the next generation of academic
librarians and ensuring a diverse workforce, consider becoming a Spectrum
Scholar mentor through the ACRL Dr. E. J. Josey Spectrum Scholar Mentor
Program. The goal of the program is to link participating library school
students and newly graduated librarians, who are of American Indian/Alaska
Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native
Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander descent, with established academic
librarians, who will provide mentoring and coaching support; serve as a role
model in academic librarianship; and provide guidance in seeking a career
path and opportunities for leadership in the profession. Because many of the
Spectrum Scholars are part-time library school students, a mentor must make
a commitment for a minimum of one year beyond the degree or a maximum of
three years.

CRITERIA FOR MENTORS

The mentors are academic librarians, both directors and non-directors, from
small, medium, and research libraries. Mentors must have a minimum of ten
years of professional library experience and be active in ACRL.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF MENTORS

A key feature of the ACRL Dr. E. J. Josey Spectrum Scholar Mentor program
includes a required training session for mentors, which will take place at
the ALA Midwinter Conference. Other responsibilities of the mentors include:

. Agreeing to contact the mentee monthly or on a regular basis.

. Agreeing to attend a Dutch-treat lunch or dinner meeting with other

Spectrum Scholars and mentors to promote networking when at ALA/ACRL
conferences.

. Agreeing to spend time with the scholar at library conferences when

both are in attendance.

. Submitting a brief (one paragraph) mid-year report and an annual

report (one page form).

DATE OF TRAINING

If you are interested in becoming a mentor in the ACRL Dr. E.J. Josey
Spectrum Scholar Mentor program, please complete the application on the ACRL
web site at http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlproftools/mentorprogram.htm by
October 31. The training session will be held at ALA Midwinter in Seattle
on Friday, January 19, 2007, from 9 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Because ACRL has no
funding for this training, librarians who agree to be mentors must be
willing to pay their own hotel/travel expenses. The cost of the training
session is free.

MENTOR/MENTEE MATCHING

The ACRL Dr. E.J. Josey Spectrum Scholar Mentor Committee (the Committee)
will match Spectrum Scholars after the conference. As the Committee is not
certain how many Spectrum Scholars will seek ACRL mentors, we may not be
able to assign you a scholar immediately. If this is the case, we will
notify you and keep your paperwork on file until your expertise is needed.

All information exchanged within the mentor/scholar relationship must be
treated as confidential.

The profession needs you. Become an ACRL mentor for a Spectrum Scholar. If
you have additional questions about the ACRL Dr. E. J. Josey Spectrum
Scholar Mentor Program, contact Theresa Byrd at tsbyrd@owu.edu or

(740) 368-3246. You may also contact Mary Jane Petrowski at ACRL at
mpetrowski@ala.org or (800) 545-2433, ext. 2523.
