(With apologies for cross-postings) Society for Scholarly Publishing—2007 Annual Meeting and Travel Grants 1) SSP Annual Meeting - June 6-8, 2007 The 29th Annual Meeting for the Society for Scholarly Publishing will be held June 6-8, at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. This year's program, "Imagining the Future: Scholarly Communication 2.0," promises to be an exciting and thought-provoking event. Is "Web 2.0" just a buzzword, or are there real opportunities for scholarly publishing lying beneath the hype? One of our speakers this year is Tim O'Reilly, who coined the phrase "Web 2.0." Come find out how evolving Internet strategies and technologies can empower you and your organization by joining us in San Francisco! Additional featured speakers are Larry Sanger (Wikipedia/Citizendium), Paul Duguid (UC Berkeley), and David Worlock (Outsell, Inc). Don't miss: * Pre-meeting seminars (June 6) on hot topics: content licensing, copyright, business usage data, and society publishing * Practical and cutting-edge program sessions for publishers, editors, librarians, scholars, printers, agents, wholesalers, booksellers, and other participants * Nationally recognized experts in many aspects of scholarly communication * Exhibitors' Marketplace and receptions * Formal and informal networking opportunities Preliminary program brochures will be mailed in a few weeks, and the brochure PDF will be posted on the website. But session abstracts, speakers, registration rates, and hotel details are available now at http://www.sspnet.org. 2) SSP Conference Travel Grant Program If you are a student in a publishing or library/information science program, or have been working in this field for less than three years, please consider applying for a grant to attend the SSP Annual Meeting. If you’re not a potential candidate, but know someone who is, please share this announcement with your colleague or protégé. We welcome help promoting the Conference Travel Grants. Following last year’s successful inauguration of this program, students of publishing and information science, and early-career publishing professionals in the first three years of employment, are invited to apply for one of 10 grants. The awards will support travel to and attendance at SSP’s 29th Annual Meeting and membership for 2007. Successful applicants will be granted free registration at the Annual Meeting and will be eligible for reimbursement of up to $1,000 for travel and lodging expenses incurred to attend the meeting. Applications must be completed online (or, for a link to the form, see the SSP home page at http://www.sspnet.org). The application deadline is March 17, 2007. Grant awardees will be selected and notified by March 31, 2007. The SSP Board has developed several supporting programs that will help grant awardees optimize their experience. Awardees will be paired with mentors who hold senior management positions within SSP member organizations. Mentors will help grantees plug into the educational and networking opportunities available at the Annual Meeting. Additionally, the meeting program will offer several opportunities designed to engage those who are relatively new to the industry. SSP is a dynamic membership organization, working to advance the development of members through education and networking.
