Appointment Rank & Salary: Appointment at the rank of Librarian II; minimum salary $45,000.
Rank and salary based on qualifications and experience.

The Gelman Library System (GLS) of The George Washington University invites applications and nominations for the position of Metadata and Digital Standards Librarian to join a dynamically-evolving digital initiatives program within the GLS in support of teaching and research at the university.  The Digital Resources Group is a new and expanding program to which the GLS has assigned 3 new staff positions, including this position.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will work to provide access to the Gelman Library Systems’ digital collections, ejournals, ebooks, and other electronic resources.  The successful candidate will oversee the creation and maintenance of metadata and associated authority control for purchased and licensed electronic content; content digitized in-house; and digital content acquired as part of manuscript and archival collections.  Digital content is created or held in the various units throughout the library, including the Collection Development Group, Special Collections and University Archives, the Global Resource Center, etc.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing quality control procedures for digital content; for keeping up-to-date on changing metadata standards; and for designing new metadata capture workflows.  The successful candidate will also train and supervise support staff in new metadata standards and workflows; and other duties associated with the creation and maintenance of digital objects and data related to them.

As a core member of the new Digital Resources Group, the successful candidate will play a leading role in evaluating and implementing the appropriate metadata standards to be used for the various formats of material held by the GLS.  Such metadata standards include, but are not limited to, MARC, METS, MODS, Dublin Core, EAD, etc. The successful candidate will work to ensure efficient and effective delivery of electronic resources to the GLS community, using emerging information technologies and standards-based methods. The successful candidate will play an active role in training technical services staff members in applying and integrating these appropriate metadata standards to existing day-to-day workflows.

Works in a highly collaborative environment to identify priority collections for metadata capture, maintains effective access to born-digital content, and – in collaboration with colleagues from other units including Special Collections and Library Information Technology - develops preservation strategies for a variety of electronic media.  Serves as one of the GLS’ experts on new technologies and developments in digital applications, and coordinates the implementation of digital initiatives with other units in the Libraries, such as Special Collections and Library Information Technology.  Participates in library planning, serves on library- and University-wide committees, task forces, and teams.  Coordinates metadata projects involving other units of the University. GLS librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field.  Reports to the Head of the Special Collections and to the Head of Library Information Technology.

The successful candidate will supervise one Metadata Specialist who will implement the metadata capture workflows that the candidate designs.

Basic Qualifications:
ALA-accredited MLS, an MIS, or equivalent advanced degree in library or information science.  Minimum three years relevant experience.  Knowledge of and experience with evolving standards of cataloging ebooks and other electronic resources, issues related to the loading and integration of MARC records. Knowledge of standards-based metadata schemes, such as XML, EAD, METS, MODS, MADS.  Knowledge of digital archiving and preservation trends.  Demonstrated successful project management experience.

Additional Selection Criteria:
Demonstrated ability to participate in a team environment to create innovative cataloging workflows that contribute to quality customer service. Experience digitizing and providing access to special or archival collections.  Excellent interpersonal skills.  Ability to work in an environment of teamwork and cooperation.  Ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
Experience in digital libraries. Evidence of supervisory experience. Evidence of innovation using emerging information technologies, including the ability to develop concepts from idea to implementation. Experience with Voyager Cataloging Module, Innovative Interfaces, SirsiDynix, ExLibris or other integrated library system. Demonstrated record of ongoing professional development and contribution.
