RESPONSIBILITIES

The UNLV Libraries seeks an innovative and future-oriented library
leader to become the Director of Research and Education, a division of
the Libraries comprised of three departments (Research & Information,
Instruction, and Collection Development), as well as three branch
libraries: Architecture Studies, Curriculum Materials and Music. The
Director of Research and Education will also provide overall leadership,
through three department heads, for the interdepartmental Libraries
Subject Liaisons Group--librarians who provide subject expertise and
outreach to academic departments and colleges in the areas of collection
development, reference, and information literacy. This senior management
position will leverage technology and staff creativity to address the
next generation of library research and information literacy
initiatives, particularly as applied to virtual reference, collection
building and analysis based on academic program development, and
instructional design. The Director will also provide leadership for
efforts with campus partners, particularly in Academic Affairs, to
ensure that the Libraries are represented and involved in the ongoing
development of campus-wide programs and services, such as the assessment
of student learning, general education, writing across the curriculum,
the first-year experience, and the culture of teaching and learning on
campus.

The Director of Research and Education is a tenure-track faculty
position that reports to the Dean of Libraries and serves on the senior
management team, contributing to strategic planning, program development
and evaluation, and allocation of resources in support of the Libraries
mission. The Director of Research and Education has six direct reports:
Head of Research & Information, Head of Instruction, Head of Collection
Development, and the Heads of the Architecture Studies, Curriculum
Materials, and Music Libraries, with ultimate oversight of a
division-wide staff of 35. The Director provides leadership in the
management of those departments, working with Department Heads as they
develop and review departmental goals, policies, and workflows; setting
priorities for the Division; and fostering staff development. The UNLV
Libraries value library-wide visioning, planning, and collaboration and
seeks a Director of Research and Education who shares that value and who
will work closely with other senior managers and with staff from across
the Libraries in group decision-making structures. The successful
candidate is expected to work collegially and to build partnerships
within the Libraries and on campus; engage in scholarly activities; and
provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in
accordance with Libraries and University standards for promotion and tenure.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: A master's degree from a program accredited by the American
Library Association; at least 5 years of recent library collection
development/reference/instruction experience; extensive knowledge and
understanding of best practices, current issues, and trends in
collection development/reference/instruction; progressively responsible
supervisory experience; evidence of ability to motivate, nurture and
develop staff, resolve conflict, and manage change; demonstrated
commitment to user-focused services and working collaboratively with a
wide range of groups and individuals; evidence of excellent
interpersonal and communication and group management skills; record of
commitment to continued professional development and effective
participation in professional associations.

Preferred: Seven to ten years of increasingly-responsible management
experience, and at least five years of experience in supervising
professional librarians in an academic library environment; experience
in electronic collection building, consortial licensing, and cooperative
collection development; substantial experience in integrating student
learning outcomes for information literacy into academic curriculum;
evidence of successful grant-writing skills.

SALARY RANGE

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at Rank III
equivalent to Associate Professor. Salaries are competitive and
dependent upon labor market. Position is contingent upon funding.
