Re: Electronic Serials - Title changes Kristina DeShazo 23 Aug 2007 20:19 UTC
Hello Cindy, This is why being a serials librarian requires a healthy sense of humor. It's like herding cats! I don't have a quick or simple answer for you. Here at OHSU we have tackled this problem in the course of loading links through our electronic resource management system (ERMS). Mostly it involves getting lists of titles from a vendor and doing an audit of the links. Yes, I mean title by title. Hopefully, once you find an instance where the link provides previous title access you make the necessary updates in catalog and you don't have to do it again. But there is more at stake here. And I digress. As to *why* the titles are being loaded together is something only the publisher or publishing platform can answer. I assume they feel this is more convenient for the end customer. Unfortunately, it can have devastating effects when those customers are using a database to locate relevant articles and the fulltext link resolver cannot "find" the article in your collection because the publisher has effectively hidden the content. I'm not sure I made myself clear or whether I've answered your question but I would be interested in any response by publishers or platform vendors on this list. I have noticed on several publisher's websites (Blackwell, Springer, etc.) that title changes show up under the most recent title of that serial, so that the previous title is buried and is not listed separately. Does anyone know why the titles are being clumped together and not being listed separately? This is becoming an increasing issue because as we link to our e-journal collection from our e-journal list. If you have noticed this - how are you handling it? Any information anyone can provide would be helpful. Thanks, Cindy Cynthia L.
