Have you taken the "Evolution in Acq/Serials" webcast? (Go to
http://www.exlibrisgroup.com/regionals/us.html  and look under "Training
Opportunities")

I took this training session when it was still owned by Endeavor, but
I'm assuming the training materials are the same.  You can learn how to
create a new complex publication pattern and it's really the only way to
go for some titles.  These training sessions can be a bit pricey, but
it's worth the money.

In terms of actually determining the pattern if it's not outlined in the
serial, the only way I know how to do it is to look at the history.

If you're referring to publication patterns in MARC Holdings format, the
CONSER Publication Pattern Initiative has a website that lists the
encoding for several likely and unlikely patterns. It is here:
http://www.loc.gov/acq/conser/patthold-PATTERNSvtls.html

If the pattern you hope to capture isn't listed, you might still be able
to figure out how to do it by looking at how some of the others have
been done.
