Subject: RE: [SERIALST] Open stacks

I am interested to know from those of you who have open periodical
stacks, particularly for displaying new issues:

Did you choose to open your periodical stacks?

**Our stacks have been
open to everyone since we added an extra floor about 10 years ago. We
used to have anything that was not bound behind locked doors -- We
figured theft would be lower, but that has not been the case -- very few
disappear now.

Requested by faculty/students?

**Faculty may sign them out of the library
but otherwise they are not allowed to leave the library.

Do you archive periodicals online through publishers packages and
purchase discounted print for public open display?

**We have JSTOR as of
Jan 2007 -- we have withdrawn lots of duplications of online and print.

Any comments?

**We moved our collection this past summer and now they are
all housed on one floor. I find it much easier to do claims.

Thanks.
