From: Shana Kimball (kimballs@umich.edu) To: SERIALST Subject: SSP announcement for Serialist Date: 1/14/08 10:06 AM * Register for the February 12 SSP Web Seminar! Digital Art for Publishers: Strategies for Success *Tuesday, February 12, 2008 – 3:00-4.30 pm EST Online using WebEx As photographic and electronic technology has advanced, the tools for creating and reproducing illustrations for scholarly publication have become easier to use and more widely accessible. Generating digital art of an appropriate quality for publication, however, can be complex for authors, and the results of their work often cause frustration for publishers, whose own staff may not have all the technical skills needed to recognize and correct potential problems with submitted art files. The end result: increased publishing expenses, production delays, and poor-quality published images. Join your publishing colleagues in this 90-minute Web seminar to discuss the perils and pitfalls of computer-based art and design for scholarly publication. Three production experts from leading academic publishers and printers (representing both the STM and humanities sectors) will share their tips for handling digital art and describe ways of avoiding some common problems. Ethical as well as technical issues will be covered. An emphasis will be placed on author guidelines, and some examples of good practice will be shared and discussed. Conducted over the WebEx platform, SSP Web seminars allow busy publishers to participate from the comfort and convenience of their own offices. All participants need is an Internet connection, a computer (PC or Mac), and a telephone. One site registration allows any number of participants in your office to participate using a single computer.
