The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a rapidly growing
research intensive University offering over 20,000 students a variety of
undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs in seven academic colleges.
UNC Charlotte is located in the largest city in North Carolina, a
beautiful southern city of 600,000 with over 1.5 million in the greater
metropolitan area, and the second largest banking center in the nation
in one of the fastest growing regions in the country.  Located on a
1,000 acre wooded campus, the University is accessible to the city's
performing arts and cultural and sports events and to recreational
lakes.

The J. Murrey Atkins Library at the University of North Carolina at
Charlotte is seeking a Head of Technical Services. The successful
candidate will provide leadership/managerial direction and oversight for
Technical Services operations and services within the Collections &
Technical Services Department.  Directly supervises one librarian and 4
support staff with a total staff of 25.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
*	 Develops and manages effective operations and services that
meet user needs, support departmental goals & objectives, and supports
the library's mission:
-	Provides progressive vision and strategic direction for the
section
-	Establishes overall workflows, policies, and procedures and
coordinates acquisitions, cataloging, processing, binding & serial
resources procedures in consultation with the AUL for Collections and
Technical Services and section personnel
-	Establishes section goals and objectives in consultation with
the AUL for Collections and Technical Services and section personnel
-	Monitors Departmental budget and ensures that funds are
appropriately expended
-	Monitors maintenance of section facilities
*	Plans for, develops, and manages personnel
-	Designs jobs to meet the operational needs of the Department.

-	Ensures that job descriptions and work plans are up-to-date
-	Participates in recruitment and selection of employees
-	Coaches employees to perform to the best of their abilities and
skills
-	Ensures that all employees are kept current on the knowledge and
skills needed to perform assigned tasks
-	Communicates performance expectations
-	Ensures that all section employees are fairly evaluated
according to established procedures
-	Acts as a resource person for all employees in the area
-	Handles employee relations issues
*	Provides training and support for new/upgraded working software
used by Collections & Technical Services Department personnel (ILS
modules, OCLC software, etc.)
-	Keeps self and section personnel up-to-date with functional
changes/enhancements in specialty software and interfaces used by
Technical Services section personnel. (e.g., Innovative technical
services modules, OCLC interfaces & client software, EbscoNet,
Collection Manager and other vendor provided systems, Cataloger's
Desktop, Classification Web)
-	Assists in the functional implementation of new ILS modules used
by Departmental personnel and coordinates training of Departmental
personnel in the mechanics and use of specialty software and interfaces.

*	Provides research support for Library collection analysis
activities.
-	Develops and performs collection statistical studies in support
of the liaison program and other library initiatives.
-	Provides research support for Innovative's data listing and
statistical reporting functionality.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
*	Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an
ALA-accredited school, or other relevant master's degree
*	Minimum of 3-5 years of administrative responsibility for at
least one technical services operational area.
*	Demonstrated ability to supervise library professionals and
support staff

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
*	3-5 years professional experience working in at least two
technical services operational areas preferred.
*	Working knowledge of an integrated library system, preferably
Innovative Interfaces
*	Knowledge of current national cataloging standards, including
but not limited to: Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, Library of Congress
Rule Interpretations, Library of Congress classification and subject
headings, current MARC formats, and OCLC
*	Knowledge of current trends in collection development,
acquisitions, serials, cataloging, and integrated library systems
*	Knowledge of managing electronic resources
*	Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
*	Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
*	Excellent computer skills
*	Excellent organizational and project management skills
*	Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a changing
technological environment
*	Demonstrated ability to manage and lead a staff with widely
diverse skills and backgrounds
*	Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and work effectively
with diverse groups
*	Strong commitment to public service as the end result of all
technical services operations.
*	Attention to detail
*	Flexibility

*	Faculty status. Librarians are expected to show evidence of
ongoing professional development and services to the profession.
*	Reports to the Associate University Librarian for Collections
and Technical Services
