Position Summary
The Head of Electronic Resources and Serials Management provides
leadership in the Libraries’ technical services operations to provide and
enhance access to electronic resources and serials. She/He is expected to
cultivate a forward-looking, collaborative environment and set high
user-centered service standards for the cataloging, processing and
holdings management of non-monographic electronic resources and serials.
This position reports to the Associate University Librarian for
Collections Services.
Responsibilities
        Provides vision and leadership in developing cost-effective,
efficient, and reliable procedures and workflows for providing access to
library electronic resources and serials.
        Works in partnership with the Collection Development,
Acquisitions, Cataloging, and Preservation departments to coordinate
policies, procedures, and workflow and to facilitate cooperation and
communication among the departments; works collaboratively with other
departments in the Libraries, as needed, to assess and respond to needs,
clarify policies, and coordinate workflow.
        Manages MetaLib administrative module, SFX, and Aleph serials
functions for the Libraries, tracking new features and upgrades and
insuring functionality.
        Coordinates the collection of use statistics for electronic
resources, analyzes data, and produces reports to support collection
development decisions.
        Manages the operations of the Electronic Resources and Serials
Management Department: sets goals, hires, supervises and evaluates staff;
prepares and manages the departmental budget; evaluates the quality of the
department’s services and operations; analyzes and reports on the work of
the department, documenting progress and identifying trends.
        Participates in the overall leadership of the Collections Services
division and of the library through membership in the Collections Services
Managers Group and Collections Council; actively contributes to
library-wide initiatives; serves on library and University committees.
        Contributes to and is highly active in local, consortial, regional
and national meetings, conferences and workshops to stay abreast of
developments/trends in electronic resources, serials management and
related technical services topics; represents Duke University Libraries as
appropriate.
        Reviews professional literature; networks with ERSM and other
technical services library professionals outside the University; and
participates in activities to stay informed about trends in supporting
information access in academic research institutions.
        Consults regularly with counterparts at other Duke Libraries and
within the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN).
        Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
        Supervises, either directly or indirectly, the staff of the
Electronic Resources and Serials Management Department.

EDUCATION:

Required:  Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or an equivalent
combination of education, experience, and training.

EXPERIENCE:

Required: At least three years of professional experience in managing
electronic resources and serials in a library; knowledge of current trends
and issues in managing electronic resources and serials; familiarity with
serials maintenance standards and formats; extensive experience with
integrated library systems; evidence of strong supervisory and library
management skills; ability to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of
the applications of new technology; effective analytical, interpersonal,
and oral and written communication skills; ability to work both
independently and as a member of a team; ability to demonstrate
flexibility and initiative in carrying out assignments; and demonstrated
commitment to providing outstanding customer services.

Preferred:  At least five years of experience in an academic or research
setting; academic library supervisory experience; knowledge of current
cataloging and metadata issues; prior experience working with federated
search tools, open URL access, link resolvers, Electronic Resource
Management systems, e-cataloging standards, non-MARC metadata and vendor
supplied bibliographic records; knowledge of trends in e-publishing;
proficiency with OCLC, ExLibris products (Aleph, MetaLib, and SFX);
experience in purchasing and negotiating the acquisition of electronic
resources and serials.
Working Conditions
        Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to
materials containing dust and mold is possible
        Normal office environment
        Occasional travel required

Salary and Benefits
Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience. Comprehensive
benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12 days sick
