The way we distinguish between bound and unbound issues is that bound
volumes get barcodes and have item records created. Unbound issues do
not. The unbound issues are in the "latest received" display
(clickable from the summary holdings statement display) and the bound
volume items are listed right below this.

I'm not sure whether this will apply to your catalog system or not.
