THE UCSD LIBRARIES - University of California, San Diego Assistant Department Head, Acquisitions Preferred appointment level: Associate Librarian I - Associate Librarian IV with an approximate salary range of $46,164-$56,496. The Libraries of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD <http://libraries.ucsd.edu/> ) seek applications from highly creative and forward thinking library professionals to join an enthusiastic and creative research library staff in support of excellence in a research library of a rapidly growing highly ranked university. With the Department Head, this position will help shape the policies, organization and workflows of a cutting edge library acquisitions operation. UCSD Libraries are innovators in the development and management of digital information resources, working in partnership with the California Digital Library to provide an online environment that makes collections and services transparent and enhances and simplifies the user experience. Department Description The Acquisitions Department acquires materials in both print and electronic form on behalf of all UCSD Libraries and carries out the acquisitions activities of the California Digital Library on behalf of all ten UC Campuses. The Department reports to the Associate University Librarian for Collection Services. It is organized into four divisions and consists of 2 FTE librarians and 22 support staff. The Libraries use the Innovative Interfaces Millennium Integrated Library System and Electronic Resources Management System in addition to the SFX Open URL Link Resolver. UCSD Libraries collections' budget is in excess of $9 million in state and endowment funds. The California Digital Library participates with UCSD and the other nine UC campuses in co-investing in digital resources in excess of more than $35 million annually. Responsibilities of the Position Reporting to the Head of Acquisitions, this position: * Provides leadership for the California Digital Library Acquisitions Program * Responsible for management of licensing and accessing electronic content * Leads collection assessment projects as assigned by Department Head and the Associate University Librarian for Collection Services. * Shares responsibility for training and oversight of staff involved in e-resource support * Leads in working with library and university information technology units and UCSD librarians to ensure robust and consistent access to our electronic resources. * Coordinates UCSD Libraries' participation in single-sign-on technology implementation (e.g. Shibboleth). * Serves as acting Department Head in the absence of the Head of Acquisitions. Required Qualifications * Professional degree from a library school or other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields relevant to library services. * Working experience with electronic materials, services, vendors, licenses, and pricing models. * Experience in troubleshooting electronic resources. * General knowledge of a range of software applications supporting access to online collections and associated technologies. * Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills. * Commitment to using new technology to advance work goals and enhance service. * Effective interpersonal oral and written communications skills. * Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. * Adaptability in a changing environment * Knowledge of electronic resources management systems. UCSD librarians are expected to participate in library-wide and system-wide planning and governance, and to be professionally active. Desirable Qualifications * Familiarity with SUSHI, ONIX-PL, and proxy/VPN technologies * Familiarity with Open URL technology. * Project management experience is preferred. * Supervisory experience.
