Re: Turn-Around Time for Journals Virginia Taffurelli 24 Mar 2009 14:49 UTC
Good morning, Holly. Here at SIBL, we check in an average of 3,000 journal issues per month. I have 3 Library Technical Assistants II (LTA II) who checkin issues in addition to preparing completed volumes for binding. Under normal circumstances, all issues received on a given day are checked in by day's end. We prioritize high use and reference shelf titles. On low staffing days, such as the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, we have a slight backlog, but catch up the following day. I have a policy in place for whenLTA IIs are out sick or on annual leave. Each LTA II is paired with an LTA III. When the LTA II is not in, his/her partner LTA III is responsible for checking in for at least an hour or two to minimize backlog. This system works well. I hope this is helpful. If you would like any additional information, please feel free to contact me off-list. I am currently in the process of analyzing a workflow study. I was hoping some of you might share how long it takes from the time your journals arrive in the mail to when they are placed on the shelves and ready for patrons to view? A week, a day, or a few hours? I'm just looking for an estimate or average. Any information would be helpful.
