Assistant Director for Technical Services (Position Number 3261)

The University of South Florida is a high-impact, global research university dedicated to student success. The University of South Florida's Library System consists of four main campus libraries and two special libraries; the Shimberg Health Sciences Library, and the Louis de la Parte Mental Health Institute Library.  USF's main research library is centrally located on the Tampa Campus.  Together, the USF Libraries provide access to more than 2 million volumes and an extensive collection of electronic resource. The USF Libraries maintain memberships in Center for Research Libraries and the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries. The Libraries also have implemented WorldCat Local and Digital Commons.  The USF Libraries are one of the eleven libraries within the state consortium that participates in the Florida Center for Library Automation.

Job Summary:

The University of South Florida's Tampa Library seeks a talented, energetic, and experienced librarian for the position of Assistant Director for Technical Services. This administrative position, which reports to the Director for Academic Resources, will manage and provide leadership and engage in technical services functions including cataloging, acquisitions, preservation, fiscal accounting, and contributing to the general development of the department.

Significant emphasis will be placed on this position's leadership role in the application of cataloging/metadata standards, and their impact on discovery services, to organize content for efficient and timely access regardless of format including print materials, media, data, open-access publications, electronic collections, digital collections, etc.

The Academic Resources Department, consisting of the Technical Services Unit and Scholarly Resources Unit, is a project-oriented, team-based organization that demands flexibility and creativity in its leadership.  Reporting directly to the Assistant Director for Technical Services are two faculty librarians, three administrative appointments and a fiscal specialist; an additional fourteen staff are in the unit.

Responsibilities:

* Provide leadership and oversight of library technical services processes, such as cataloging (including metadata), material processing, print serials, preservation, and acquisitions.
* Maintain a high level of knowledge in the theoretical and practical aspects of library technical services.
* Maintain a high level of knowledge in the area of library automation and technology specific to the acquisition, cataloging, and processing of library resources.
* Maintain a detailed level of knowledge regarding the Library's library management system (LMS).
* Maintain a functional familiarity with standards and tools commonly in use in technical services.
* Manage the collection budget in compliance with institutional policies.
* Develop goals, priorities and strategies for technical services.
* Direct the hiring, scheduling, training and evaluation of department staff and librarians in technical services.
* Responsible for documentation and procedures, as needed.
* Collaborate with other library units and USF regional libraries, as needed.

Required Qualifications:

* ALA accredited Masters Degree in Library Science.
* A minimum of four years experience in technical services in an academic, research, or special library with increasing responsibility.
* A minimum of three years supervising staff and librarians.
* Comprehensive knowledge of the application of standards-compliant metadata, irrespective of resource format, and appropriate for various communities of practice.
* Demonstrated project management experience.
* Functional knowledge of budget management principles and practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Comprehensive knowledge of OCLC bibliographic and authority functions.
* Functional knowledge of NACO and SACO policies and practices; and of RDA and FRBR and their application.
* Functional knowledge of the impact of technical services on discovery services.
* Familiarity with vendor licenses and negotiations.
* Demonstrated engagement in professional organizations, research and publication.

Position Information:

Salary commensurate with experience, no less than $70,000.
