Resource Description and Access (RDA): Preparation and Training

NOTSL (Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians) is pleased to present a program focusing on preparation for RDA implementation. The Library of Congress, and other national and international libraries, will fully implement Resource Description and Access (RDA) as the replacement for AACR2 on March 31, 2013. The Library of Congress has issued a long range training plan for 2012, which outlines the steps it will be taking to train and prepare their staff for this change. While a select group of libraries participated, either formally or informally, in the RDA test in Fall 2010, many libraries have done very little to prepare their staff and adjust their workflows for incorporating RDA. The goal of this NOTSL workshop is to make libraries aware of the current national plans for RDA implementation and to help them begin their own preparation process. Our speakers will focus on topics such as the current status of preparation for RDA at the national library level, the issues surrounding staff training and workflow planning for RDA implementation, and will offer an in-detail examination of the impact of RDA on cataloging audio-visual materials.

Our Presenters

Chris Oliver is the author of Introducing RDA: a Guide to the Basics (2010). In 2011, she was appointed the RDA Copy Editor with the mandate to improve the readability of five RDA chapters (6, 9-11, and 17).  In her role as Copy Editor, she is working as part of the team responding to the concerns of the U.S. RDA Test Coordinating Committee.  Chris has been a member and Chair of the Canadian Committee on Cataloguing (CCC) for many years, which has given her the opportunity to be involved with the evolution of RDA from its early beginnings. She was also a member of the Joint Steering Committee's Format Variation Working Group and Chair of the RDA Outreach Group. Chris enjoys writing and talking about RDA and FRBR. In addition to articles, she also wrote a research report for the Initiative for Equitable Library Access, a program of Library and Archives Canada. She has given numerous presentations on various aspects of RDA, mainly in Canada and the U.S.  Her most recent presentation in the U.S. was as one of the speakers for RDA 201, the two day preconference on RDA cataloguing at ALA Annual in 2011. Chris received both of her master's degrees from McGill University, M.A. in Political Science and MLIS. She has worked at the McGill University Library since 1989, beginning as a rare books cataloguing librarian, and then in various positions as a cataloguing manager. She is currently Coordinator of Cataloguing and Authorities.

Erin Stalberg is currently the Director of Discovery and Access at Mount Holyoke College, where she leads Library, Information, and Technology Services' staff in Access Services, Technical Services, and Archives & Special Collections.  From 2007-2011, she was Head of Metadata & Cataloging at North Carolina State University Libraries in Raleigh, NC.  NCSU Libraries was a participant in the US National Libraries RDA Test. Stalberg has held previous positions as Head of Cataloging Services at the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA) and as the Librarian for Semester at Sea (spring 2007 voyage), traveling around the world. Stalberg has also taught Organization of Materials II as an adjunct at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Information and Library Science.  Her professional interests include change management, integration of metadata initiatives into traditional cataloging departments, and training of support staff in non-MARC metadata creation. She serves as webmaster for the Women's Studies Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and is currently Chair-Elect for the ALCTS Cataloging and Metadata Management Section (formerly known as CCS).

Peter Lisius is the Music and Media Catalog Librarian at Kent State University. He catalogs music and media material for the Performing Arts Library, the Main Library and other branches located on campus. Formats for which he is responsible include music scores, sound recordings, video recordings and electronic resources. Peter holds degrees in music and history from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and also a library science degree from Indiana University-Bloomington, with a specialization in music librarianship. Prior to his employment at Kent State, Peter was a Senior Librarian/Music Cataloger at the New York Public Library. Peter recently served as co-editor for the publication Directions in Music Cataloging (Music Library Association, 2012).
