Re: binding Heather Shore 24 Aug 2012 12:49 UTC

Hi Mykie,
We also have had our binding budget cut over the years and have developed a system that seems to work.

We maintain approx. two to three current year's worth of issues for any given title in our reading room, (i.e this year would hold all of 2010, 2011, and 2012 issues as they come in).
Ususally, once per year, loose issues are pulled from the reading room; labels with call number added, and issues are sent to the bound shelves.
(e.g. when 2012 issues started arriving, all of 2009 was pulled and sent to bound stacks).

We tattle strip titles that tend to "walk off", or exceed a certain value, at the time of receipt and check-in, not when they are sent to bound stacks.
However, occasionally one or two issues of any given title that is not usually tattle-stripped, will be, when sent to bound stacks just to keep people honest.
So far, there have not been many problems with individual issues going missing. This procedure has been done for about the past 5-6 years.

Journals that are physically robust enough to stand up on their own, are shelved as is.
Journals which are soft-covered, floppy, and would bend and slide off shelves, are placed in pamphlet boxes to keep them upright and tidy on shelves.
The pamphlet boxes are labeled with title, call number, and year(s) of the publication contained int that specific box.
This way, the issues remain accessible for patrons and staff.

As an aside, some of our issues that are generally tattle-stripped used to go walk-about as well.
Since we started putting tattle-strips in issues in one of the back offices where patrons could not see what the strips looked like, it is less of a problem.
Boxes of tattle strips are occasionally checked at the security gate (to ensure they are actually activated) prior to their application to issues.
Of course, if an issue is tucked into a backpack with a number of other items, the alarm may well not go off in any event.

I hope this is helpful.

Best,
Heather

Hi Everyone,
Our binding budget will be cut this year. I’m not sure by how much or if it will totally be cut. What have you all been doing instead of binding? Sending loose issues to the bound shelves when there normally would have been a unit big enough to bind? If you do this, do you put tattle strips every issue? Right now, we only strip the titles that tend to “walk off,” even though they still go missing. What other options are there besides shrink wrap?

Thanks!
Mykie
