Re: BackServ SMG - Journals 06 Mar 2015 16:20 UTC

Sorry to find that I was correct, that both BackMed and BackServ were Swets creations.

For BackMed, it was suggested that the professional organization for medical librarians, might be a logical sponsor for the list serv. Fortunately Medical Library Association agreed to take over the computer hosting.

For BackServ [which I do not use], I would suggest you also consider the same thing, if your library types have a national/professional organization......approach them to host BackServ.

I personally think it is better for this kind of list serv not to be controlled thru a commercial service/publisher.

My two cents worth on paper:
My paper continues to be an ILL resource for other medical libraries, and I am not bound by contract terms to not allow an electronic journal to be used for ILL [as is found within certain publisher or journal aggregator contracts]. When you do not renew your electronic subscriptions, it takes but a momentary change to turn off your access, and you may or may not have archival access to the years you had previously subscribed. The paper copies remain the property of my institution, not just 'rented' from the publisher. I can appreciate both forms, but not convinced that a 100% digital library is the solution for all libraries, unless they are lucky enough to win the PowerBall.

Hi All,
I am with Jeannette - I hope someone steps up to host BACKSERV. I feel it is still useful.
There are still periodical issues that we need (and also offer) that we do not have online.

Also I figure out why my student was using the email address of Backserv@friends.edu

Edmund Stanley Library at Friends University must have been using the email address Backserv@friends.edu. for when they used the BACKSERV.
At one time our library either requested an item from or sent an item to their library.
Our email system automatically stores email addresses that are used by the system.
When BACKSERV went away our email system began using the only Backserv address that it could find when it no longer could find the Swets address.

(So sorry to drag you into this and cause you confusion, Sara DeCaro. ) Wilma

I did a little more digging on my own after posting my query - I hadn't realized Backserv was Swets. We're looking at changing our ILS here and so many things have gone under or over the wire for me these past few months.

We got the usual mailing lists membership reminder on Feb. 1.

But then, It turns out the last list I sent, on Feb. 2, was returned to me as undeliverable. (I have Backserv posts automatically routed to another email folder.) And the last posts I got were dated Feb. 4.

I did, just now, email mailman-owner@nalist1.swets.com, and so far, at least, it hasn't been returned.

I will post again if I learn anything more. It really would be nice if someone else would take it over. Ebsco people, perhaps? Or . . . I don't even know what doing something like this entails. Is it a lot of work? Time? Money? Or is the feeling that it's just not that useful any more, that the digital age obviates the need for paper replacements?

Sincerely,

Jeanette Skwor

Thanks, Sara.
Have you found out the reason why yet?
Or has anyone else heard anything yet?

Hello Everyone,
My student worker is actually in charge of the backserv. I'm not sure why nothing has been posted since the beginning of February, but I will get to the bottom of it. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
