 6. Title sorting in AtoZ lists

In our AtoZ lists both title and 'normalized' title are used.
Normalization means: letter+diacritic is replaced by the letter, and initial, leading article is removed (for Dutch, English, German and French titles)

Hi,

I directed similar questions to our coordinator a few months back. Here is the response I received, with regards to the title 'The Advocate':

When searching "Advocate":
The AtoZ system will search for all titles beginning with Advocate or The Advocate, in this search the word the will be ignored by the search system if it begins the title of the journal.
When searching "The Advocate":
The AtoZ system will search for all titles beginning with The Advocate and will also include any journal that has an alternate title beginning with The Advocate (such as the journal Advocate). Because in this search we are purposely using the word the to begin the journal title our system will not include titles that do not begin with the word the, unless of course there is an alternate title listed that meets these search parameters.
Perhaps listing an alternate title?

List it in both places?

Subject: [SERIALST] Title sorting in AtoZ lists

Hello Colleagues:

I would like to know how other librarians handle the word "The" in titles sorts on their AtoZ list. One of my colleagues asked about removing the word because of the problem it creates when using the "Begins with" search on the titles in our AtoZ list. I don't necessarily find a problem with it except in cases where "the" has real meaning such as "The American" or "The American Dream" which are two titles in our list of 1788 titles where "The" is the first word.

There's probably an easy answer for this but it's Friday and there's construction in my building! (And no air conditioning)

Thanks,
